देवः बुद्धिमान् किम्?

एकस्मिन् नगरे कश्चित् व्यापारी आसीत्। एकदा सः व्यापारी व्यापारर्थम् अन्यं ग्रामम् अगच्छत्। मार्गमध्ये श्रान्तः वृक्षच्छायायाम् उपाविशत्। सः महान् वृक्षः वटवृक्षः। तस्मिन् वृक्षे अनेकानि फलानि आसन्। किन्तु तानि फलानि लघूनि क्षुद्राणि अल्पानि अत्यन्तसूक्ष्माणि च।

समीपे एव काचित् लता आसीत्। सा कूष्माण्डलता। तस्याम् अपि अनेकानि फलानि आसन्। किन्तु सा लता अतीव कृशा दुर्बला च आसीत्। ततः सा लता सुदृढं न तिष्ठति यतः बलं नासीत्। तस्याः फलानि तु महाकायानि महाप्रमाणानि स्थूलकायानि च। कूष्माण्डफलानि अतीव बृहन्ति खलु।

सः व्यापारी तत् दृष्ट्वा एवम् अचिन्तयत्। सृष्टिकर्तुः बुद्धिः नास्ति यतः सुदृढस्य वृक्षस्य फलानि अत्यल्पानि एतस्याः दुर्बलायाः लतायाः फलानि महाकायानि सृष्ट्वान् इति चिन्तितवान्। तदनन्तरं सः व्यापारी वृक्षच्छायायां किंचित्कालं निद्राम् अकरोत्। निद्रानन्तरं प्रबुद्धः अपश्यत् अनेकानि वटफलानि स्वदेहस्य उपरि। शतशः फलानि।

तदा पुनः सः अचिन्तयत्। यदि एतानि फलानि कूष्माण्डवत् महाप्रमाणानि अभविष्यन् अहं मृतः अभविष्यम्। देवः अतीव बुद्धिमान् खलु। अहम् एव मूर्खः। वटवृक्षच्छायायाम् अनेके जनाः निद्रां कुर्वन्ति। ततः वटवृक्षस्य अल्पानि एव फलानि भवेयुः। लतायाः छायायां न कोऽपि निद्रां करोति। ततः कूष्माण्डफलानि महाकायानि असृजत्। देवस्य बुद्धिः अप्रमेया अचिन्तनीया च इति।


devaḥ buddhimān khalu?

ekasmin nagare kaścit vyāpārī āsīt| ekadā saḥ vyapārī vyāpārārtham anyaṁ grāmam agacchat| mārgamadhye śrāntaḥ vṛkṣacchāyāyām upāviśat| saḥ mahān vṛkṣaḥ vaṭavṛkṣaḥ| tasmin vṛkṣe anekāni phalāni āsan| kintu tāni phalāni laghūni kṣudrāṇi alpāni atyantasūkṣmāṇi ca|

samīpe eva kācit latā āsīt| sā kūṣmāṇḍalatā| tasyām api anekāni phalāni āsan| kintu sā latā atīva kṛśā durbalā ca āsīt| tataḥ sā latā sudṛḍhaṁ na tiṣṭhati yataḥ balaṁ nāsīt| tasyāḥ phalāni tu mahakāyāni mahāpramāṇāni sthūlakāyāni ca| kūṣmāṇḍaphalāni atīva bṛhanti khalu|

saḥ vyāpārī tat dṛṣṭvā evam acintayat| sṛṣṭikartuḥ buddhiḥ nāsti yataḥ sudṛḍhasya vṛkṣasya phalāni atyalpāni etasyāḥ durbalāyāḥ latāyāḥ phalāni mahakāyāni sṛṣṭavān iti cintitavān| tadanantaraṁ saḥ vyāpārī vṛkṣacchāyāyāṁ kiṁcitkālaṁ nidrām akarot| nidrānantaraṁ prabuddhaḥ apaśyat anekāni vaṭaphalāni svadehasya upari| śataśaḥ phalāni|

tadā punaḥ saḥ acintayat| yadi etāni phalāni kūṣmāṇḍavat mahāpramāṇāni abhaviṣyan ahaṁ mṛtaḥ abhaviṣyam| devaḥ atīva buddhimān khalu| aham eva mūrkhaḥ| vaṭavṛkṣacchāyāyām aneke janāḥ nidrām kurvanti| tataḥ vaṭavṛkṣasya alpāni eva phalāni bhaveyuḥ| latāyāḥ chāyāyāṁ na ko'pi nidrāṁ karoti| tataḥ kūṣmāṇḍaphalāni mahākāyāni asṛjat| devasya buddhiḥ aprameyā acintanīyā ca iti|


There was a tradesman in a city. Once that tradesman went to another village for trade. On the way he was tired and sat under a tree. That was a big tree, a banyan tree. On that tree there were many fruits. But those fruits were small, negligible and too little in size.

Nearby only there was a vine. That was a pumpkin vine. On that also there were many fruits. But that vine was very thin and weak. Hence that vine was drooping down since it had no strength. But its fruits were big and huge in size. The pumpkins are usually big, are they not?

After seeing that, the tradesman thought thus, "The creator has no intelligence because he created such small fruits on that strong tree and such big fruits on the weak vine". After that the tradesman slept a little while under that tree. When he got up after sleep he saw many banyan fruits fallen on his body, hundreds of fruits.

Then he thought again, "If these fruits were as big as the pumpkins, I would have been dead. God is very intelligent indeed. I am only a fool. In the shade of the banyan tree, many sleep. Hence it should have small fruits only. No one sleeps under the shade of a vine. Hence He created such big pumpkin fruits. God's intelligence is beyond measure and unimaginable."
